O filtro coalescente elimina a contaminação submicrônica por meio de três métodos que agem paralelamente, de acordo com o tamanho do aerossol em suspensão.

O equipamento de remoção de partículas em suspensão é constituído por diversos obstáculos pensados para aumentar o efeito dos três processos de coalescência. Diferente dos filtros usuais de linha, eles direcionam o fluxo de ar de dentro para fora.
​
Os contaminantes são presos na malha do filtro e agrupados em gotículas maiores a partir de colisões com as microfibras de borossilicato.
Essas gotículas passam para o lado exterior do tubo do filtro, onde são agrupadas e drenadas a partir da gravidade.
